1. Basics and related work

In this chapter, a brief introduction to Computer-Supported Cooperative Work is given. First, we discuss the different aspects of CSCW, especially the differences between synchronous and asynchronous applications. Later, in section 1.4 we compare existing synchronous CSCW applications and discuss important characteristics of such applications. The last section, section 1.5, describes the field of application of the developed Distributed Graphics Laboratory. In addition, this section also postulates the requirements for the Distributed Graphics Laboratory.
